ABOUT US

Following the collapse of the Somali government in 1991, massive starvation accompanied by violence and bloodshed hit the country. Consequently, a number of local and international NGOs have initiated an emergency response to alleviate the suffering. African Volunteers for Relief and Development (AVORD) was born as part of this response and was officially launched on May 2nd 1991. Since then, AVORD has implemented numerous projects across Somalia in partnership with various agencies such as UNDP, UNHCR, the Somalia Stability Fund (SSF), among others.

Recent Projects

  • Distribution of Non-Food Item (NFI) kits to 4,000 vulnerable IDP households in B/weyn
  • Cash for Work program to promote returnee reintegration in Baidoa district
  • Job creation for youth in Beletweine through vocational trainings workshops and business development
